Amigos has partnered with Fearless Future, a consulting firm with experience supporting libraries, to offer a course covering the fundamentals of designing and developing a self-paced tutorial. The course is scheduled in the Amigos online classroom Wednesdays March 30 –May 5, 2011.

Instructional Design 101 for the Busy Librarian
Dates and Time: March 30, April 6, 13, 20, 27, and May 4, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Central Time each day
This course consists of six 2-hour sessions.

Known for creating engaging and practical workshops, online classes, and presentations, Fearless Future instructors Mary Evangeliste and Yvonne Mery will guide you through the steps of creating effective and engaging tutorials for staff development, patron training, or library instruction. Participants will get hands-on experience in the development of a tutorial as they work with different rapid e-learning authoring tools. This comprehensive course is easy to access and will help you quickly master the skills of developing or presenting training

Yvonne Mery is currently an instructional design librarian at the University of Arizona Libraries. Before becoming a librarian Yvonne taught English as a Second Language abroad and in the US. Yvonne’s most recent work has concentrated on best practices in online teaching, information literacy online instruction, and assessment. Yvonne has given several workshops and presentations on these themes including presentations at LOEX of the West, the Annual Conference on Distance Teaching and Learning, the Technology, Colleges, and Community Online Conference, and the Arizona Library Association. Yvonne recently co-authored a chapter in the book “Best Practices for Credit-Bearing Information Literacy Course” that chronicles the development and implementation of an online information literacy course. In addition to her MLS, Yvonne also holds an MA in Applied Linguistics and a BA in English Literature.

Mary Evangeliste is the owner of “Fearless Future: Consulting for things that matter.” She has written and presented widely over the past five years on change management and non-profit marketing. Mary is the co-author of the best-selling book “Bite Sized Marketing: Realistic Solutions for the Overworked Librarian.” Some of the local and national groups Mary has taught with include the State Department, Maryland School of Art and Design, Prince George’s Community College, University of Pittsburgh, Amigos, and Lyrasis. She holds a B.A. in Art History from Allegheny College and an M.L.I.S. from the University of Pittsburgh. Before Mary worked in museums and libraries she had her own dog walking business, was an art consultant, and managed an alt-rock band.

Become Market Ready!

I have just returned from vacation and I am back to my desk and my emails, but I keep thinking about the energy, excitement and participation at our Become Market Ready! workshop at ALA in DC.  Even though it was 8:30 AM in the morning, the vibe in the air was electric with curiosity. Mary and I are decidedly not morning people and were dreading the fact that we were placed in the 8AM workshop slot. There was so much interaction, Mary and I felt like we were not leading the workshop, but facilitating it!  Everyone was asking questions and generating ideas, there was laughter and activity; but what really caught my sleepy eye was that with all levels of experience in the room, there was support and respect amongst all of us and I thank all of you who participated in that workshop.

So I have to tell you about what happened right afterwards.  I was in the bathroom, because my Venti Americano had done its job, and a participant stopped me to tell me that the workshop was both “valuable and entertaining.”

“Thank you,” I said, “we had fun too.”

Full Time Fearless!

I have resigned from my position in PA and I am currently in Washington, DC working with a variety of amazing Fearless Future clients. From here I will venture to Western PA.  to visit my extended family. Then I will make my way to my spiritual home-Tucson, AZ. I try to stay away from the sonoran desert but it pulls me back each time!

Jonathan and I knew when we started Fearless Future five years ago that sooner or later one of us would do it full time. We have grown from just hopes and dreams to working with amazing educational, environmental, wellness and social justice clients. These clients inspire us to create the best design and marketing to get the word out about the amazing work they do!

I will always be a librarian and I am grateful for the 12 years I spent in higher education. I love working with students on their research and have been deeply effected by many of my colleagues’ kindness. I have incredible friends from everywhere because of libraries.

We hope to continue to work with librarians all over the world to create exciting and fresh marketing. And of course I am always available for workshops and consultations.

The world of social marketing and design is so exciting right now that I feel that I just cant miss it. Witness the growth of magazines like ODE and groups like GOOD.

I feel like our society is right on the verge of realizing how to apply great marketing and design to solve some of the world’s largest problems.

Most of you know that I have always loved studying and making art and creating social design is my way of translating that skill to the world.

Also, at the Swap & Shop my colleague from American University Library and fellow Fearless Collaborator, Patricia West and I will be accepting our award for the Best of Show Annual Report we created together last year.
This annual report has also won two additional awards: The Graphic Design USA InHouse Design Award and the Award of Excellence from the Communicator Awards.

Internal marketing is really important to us at Fearless Future. It something we often talk about with people when we are conducting workshops around the country. Internal marketing is defined as everything you do to inform and include your internal staff in your marketing efforts. It is so important that we devote a chapter in our book to the topic.

Mary and her colleague and friend Amy Ward will conduct an interactive workshop on internal marketing as part of the Grassroots program called Become Market Ready!

Amigos Partners with Fearless Future to Offer Online Library Marketing Course

Dallas, TX – Amigos Library Services has partnered with Fearless Future, a design and marketing consulting firm with experience supporting libraries, to offer to offer Selling Your Library Without Selling Out! an online project-based marketing course for librarians.

Fearless Future instructors Mary Evangeliste and Yvonne Mery will guide attendees and future designers through the steps needed to create an effective marketing campaign. Class activities will be structured around the actual marketing needs of participants. In true workshop fashion, students will leave the course with a real marketing plan.
The course is scheduled for the Amigos online classroom the first four Mondays in March from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. CDT.

Describing the course, Laura Kimberly, Amigos’ Associate Director and Continuing Education Services Manager said, “This is an excellent course to take within the walls of one’s library and at the same time have access to the ideas of other students and knowledgeable instructors who span the country. You are not alone: managing change in user/access services with compassion and commitment.

In this panel presentation three managers of Access Services share the triumphs, disappointments and the “down right uncomfortable” work of transforming a user/access services department. Changes in the user/access service areas are inevitable; systems change and improve, vendors change, production numbers increase or decrease and technology dictates changes in work flow. How can we learn from each other instead of feeling as if we are in this all alone? How can we strive to create respectful workplaces while also asking employees to change when they are comfortable with the current state of their unit? We will discuss how to conduct a gap analysis to identify areas that need improvement, system analysis to aid in the sometimes-contentious abandonment of legacy services, and the most important component of change leadership –how to communicate clearly and effectively with staff so that are informed, educated and feel that they are fundamental in the success of the transformation.
